A method for preliminary timing:remove all spark plugs except number
one (on a Peugeot no. 1 is the rear plug).Turn the engine manually.
One method is to use a socket on the bolt head in the center of the
crankshaft pulley(32mm on my N9TEA).Make sure you are turning the
engine in the same direction as when it is running. When you can feel
compression building it means no. 1 is coming up to TDC.Continue until
the timing marks are lined up.Remove distributor cap and check that
the rotor is aligned with the contact for no.1 spark plug wire.
By this method you can often get the timing close enough that the
engine will start and then you can use a timing light for more precise
adjustment.
Possibly your distributor gear is meshed to the wrong tooth on the
cam.Or maybe you just have the wires in the wrong place on the
distributor cap(easy to do but easy to fix).
Also check all other ignition related connections such as all wires
to the coil.
Best of Luck,Daryl
