Re: [Peugeot-L] To buy or not to buy?

Gavin,
There are a lot of variables here.
First, if you are not mechanically inclined, this is the car for you if and only if there is a reliable and competent mechanic nearby. If that is not the case, go no further. Do not get sentimental. If there's a good mechanic who is familiar with the 505 in the area, how deep are your pockets? Plan on new brakes and a new exhaust. Check the radiator and all the hoses. Alternator. Starter. Battery. How old are these? Ball joints, tie rod ends, motor and tranny mounts. Axle boots. There are many rubber parts to replace. Rubber deteriorates with age. If I were given the car, I'd expect to spend at least three grand on the replacement items and making the thing reliable, but I wouldn't even think of buying it if there were rust involved.
Check the doors, at the underside where the seams meet. Check at the fenders where they are bolted to the body. Windshield lower. Check the rear arms under the car. Check the floor.
Is it an autobox? Drive it from cold and be sure the shifts are all when and where they belong. Take a look at the AT fluid. It should be pink. If you can get the thing roadworthy and fix and/or replace many of the components which should be replaced because you know they'll "go" and leave you stranded, it will be an extremely reliable and fun-to-drive car. One thing I have seen is that once the replaceable components have been swapped and all of the little bugs fixed, these cars are more reliable and durable than any American car. Do not expect jack rabbit starts, and do not expect to hear lots of people say, "Oh, yes, I'll be happy to work on it, and there'll be no problem getting parts."
