Yes, that's a good idea. You can check it with a metal straight ruler and feeler gauges. I just checked two of my exhaust manifolds. The first one had at least 0,7 mm gap and the second about 0,5 mm. You can feel how the ruler rocks. The machine shop took 0,8 mm away from the first. It's very common for N9T exhaust manifolds to wrap like this, IMHO.

Well, I did install the head with everything bolted to it. ;-D It was quite easy with a hook on the ceiling and a hoist... Getting it out was more difficult. It helps greatly to detach the first muffler from its holder. Then the whole exhaust pipe moves back enough to make it easier to deal with those three downpipe stud bolts (at least in the European version sedan).

Attaching the exhaust manifold is easier with head out of the engine room, IMHO. However, tomorrow I have to bolt it up with the engine in place. ;-)
