Peat,

Thank you very much for the information.

Maybe the alternator is a Motorola one then. It looks to be "jury rigged" with a nut and washer that slide over the pivot bolt, used as a spacer,

The brushes look good and the rotor measured about 70 ohms. I don't know if that is too high across the slip rings or not.

I think that the voltage regulator is part of the diode rectifier assembly , and it's removal will require un-soldering the field from the assembly. I am willing to do that , if I can find out as to where I could buy the voltage regulator.

That thing on the transmission looks real odd to me. I will have to find out if it is rubber tomorrow. Also to see if it is fastened somehow to the car body. Apparently the transmission is leaking fluid, so it is covered with oil.

Is that the thing with a bolt going through the center and what should be rubber donut type bushings? That's the counterweight/torque stabilizer (not sure of the proper name) for the tranny.

The '87 Microfiche list either a Motorola 9ar2672p or a Valeo 2940426 for the 86 XN6. I think you should be able to replace the regulator separately, as long as the alt bearings are still good.
