Bad battery connection, at the battery, the engine block, the starter or the power distributor on the left front. Turn everything on, head lamps and ignition, wiggle connectors untill everything does come on, you'll have found your bad contact

The day started well. I finally got the Mi16's clutch hooked up (the nasty little nylon connector broke) after almost two weeks of excuses. During that time, the battery sat on the garage floor.   Once I got the clutch switch back into position and the cable adjusted, I reinstalled the battery, heard some little clicks, the radio came on and turned itself back off and retracted the antenna, etc. When I tried the key I got practically nothing. As I recall, the full set of instrument lights were on. I checked to make sure the battery wasn't reversed, and retightened the cables. Nothing. Battery voltage at about 12.7 v.   Putting my trusty old battery charger on it didn't do any good; meter didn't indicate any charging at all. The battery shows 12.7 volts whether connected to the car or not.Clock will at least show the time until I turn the key once. No dash lights, no nothing. I'm guessing my attempts to get the car going blew a fuse somewhere.   Can anyone point me in the right direction?

1 - Why it wouldn't start, or at least give a serious attempt, with 12.5 volts showing, when it was first reconnected?
2 - What did I mess up in the process of figuring out #1?
3 - Try to NOT tell me I blew the alternator.
