[Peugeot-L] 1981 505s TD fuel pre-filter removal & biodiesel effect to IP

Hi
I finally got the radiator fan switch installed. While I was down there I decided to look at the fuel pre-filter again. I had by-passed it because I couldn't get it out last time I tried. As I stand in front of the car the pre-filter is on the right side next to the vacuum canister. I removed the cool plastic handled clamp, which I assume is to make changing the filter easy. Well that part is easy, but the filter won't come up far enough to get it out because it hits the hood release mechanism. Is this the way the pre-filter is mounted from the factory? Or has someone moved it?

Also, I think the rubber in the hoses and seals are finally disintegrating from running straight biodiesel for six months! I had to repair all the hose ends and still have much difficulty starting the car. I checked the injector pump by turning the engine over with a new battery and releasing the nuts at the injectors. There was not at lot of fuel pumping out but it gave a squirt at each injector. Next I checked the supply to the IP by using the primer pump and it seems like a decent flow is there. Next I checked the suction at the input to the IP. This was wimpy while turning the engine over. I am thinking the biodiesel has done the same thing to the seals in the IP as it does to all rubber; swollen and softens it.

The engine fires if I shoot a small quantity of starting fluid in the oil bath air cleaner.
Then it runs great, like nothing was ever wrong. It seems like I need to learn how to rebuild injector pumps now that I am becoming a diesel mechanic.
