  The question is, are you uncomfortable with brakes because you just don' have much experience, or are you uncomfortable with brakes because you don't want to do brakes? If the later, then don't even think about axle shaft replacement. If the former, then you could consider giving it a try.

  Although, without an assistant, or at least a mechanically inclined buddy to help you out in case you get stuck, I would recommend leaving it to a pro.
