Ken:
I had a STX from 1998 to 2004. I travelled 60,000 miles in it and
spent a horrendous $13,000 in repairs. The main problem was the ABS
brakes, which would make me avoid buying another STX. The control unit
went and later the system developed a fault, which no one could fix - I
ended up junking the car. I had to have the car towed 5 times - I knew
every tow truck driver in town and the mechanics would run to the
toilet when they saw me coming.
The problems I had with my car: oil leaks (sender units), abs problems,
electric problems, fuel pumps, alternator (I went through three of
them), noisy transmission, leaking steering rack, brakes, clutch push
rod (snapped),central locking, bad power window switches and motors,
ECU replaced, starter motor. All this was between 100,000 and 160,000
miles.
In my experience, the fuel system, electrical system, and the ABS
braking system are the weak points with the STX. Depending on how long
you own, it, you could have to replace everything electrical on the car.
The engine itself was great - powerful and smooth and relatively
troublefree apart from oil leaks.
