Good Morning
An 85 huh? I am envious. Ours is an 1981 505s turbo diesel, in exceptionally
great shape. Of course there is a stack a service records for just about
everything I can think of in the trunk when I scored this beauty. 25 years
is a long time to keep a car on the road. Many of those years I'm sure it
was difficult for the previous owners to find a Peugeot mechanic, let alone
a diesel automobile mechanic. Anyway the car was rescued by yours truly and
now I can hardly find a time to work on it when my wife isn't driving it.
However, when I have managed to get the 505 in the shop I found working on
it a breeze. I adjusted the valves, torqued the head bolts which fixed a
minor head gasket leak (exhaust to coolant). Replaced the radiator
temperature switch, glow plugs, (twice - don't buy AC or Champion), changed
the oil and filter a couple of weeks ago. Since I am making my own fuel I've
changed out some of the fuel lines and replaced fuel filters a couple of
times too. Speedo was not working as it needed some oil, and the cable wore
down on the end which I fixed with heat shrink tube. Knock on wood it is
still working. Tail light assembly is a poor design or missing weather
sealant because the side with the tail pipe gets fouled and even (months)
after I soldered all the connections all the lights blink with the
indicators. I know the ground is bad, but like I said if the little woman
wasn't driving it every day to work and to meetings I could look at it. Hell
but that in itself says it all. I don't know how many of you try to keep a
25 year old car running for your women, but it is a heck of a testament for
Peugeot.
