Patricia -
IŒm sure someone from Seattle area will offer mechanic suggestions. Seattle
has very good representation on this list.
In the last few months Iıve done 2 steering rack replacements myself. The
first one took a while; but the 2nd was ³routine² (I easily beat the ³shop
time²). If your mechanic has a problem with steering racks, look elsewhere.
As to your differential, Iıll share my experience: on my Œ85 there was a
constant drone noise. Given the cost of replacement, you might just want to
live with it, if that is all it is. If it gets worse (yes I will attest
that it can - although maybe 5 years later), you might want to try draining
the differential fluid and replacing it with synthetic. In my case that
bought an extra year (after recovering a few teeth in the drain process).
I called the Portland, Oregon expert (Dave Edgar Eurocar; highly
recommended). He said that it would be best if I found a good replacement
differential first. Which Iıd already done planning to replace it myself.
(Since Iıve subsequently already gotten the best replacement differential on
this list, you might want to inquire as to others available. Brian Holm is
usually a first place to check for any parts new or used.)
The Peugeot ³Shop time² manual indicates 4.75 hours for a 505 wagon
differential replacement; Eurocar quoted 7 hours. I will speculate that
that is because working on a 20 year old car is a little different than
working on it when new. (did I mention that Eurocar is not cheap? but from
all accounts Iıve received, they do very quality work.)
(Bob if you are reading this: 15 years ago when I replaced a Volvo
transmission I said I was to old for this shit. This time I had everything
set up in my garage, but, when I picked upt that differential, and thought
about the weight of the axels... not to mention other things going on in my
life. Anyway, Eurocar is doing the differential replacement.)
