Often it is a loose fitting that is the soruce of the leak For about $180 I can have a 405 converted to R134a, tested and filled.

How much is a pound of R12 on the black market $150?

Charging the air conditioner is fairly easy, however your problem will be acquiring R-12 which is the Freon required for the 89 MI-16.

First you should buy a set of gauges, if you have a leak you should have it repaired, becuase R-12 does deplete the Ozone.

After you repair the leak take the center hose and hook it up to the Ref. cylinder, take the red hose( High Pressure) and hook it up to the discharge and the Blue to the suction. You will know right away which is which because the discharge will read much higher. If the AC is off the correct reading should be between 60 and 80 PSI under the R-12 meter, if the AC is running it should read on the low side between 40-55   PSI and on the high side between 120-140 PSI.

When charging the AC do it slowly, an over charged unit will not work properly and might blow out the compressor head gasket. After you hook up the center hose to the Ref. cylinder close both sides on the manifold valve, at his point you should also have the high and low side hoses hooked up, turn the cylinder up side down and open the Cylinder valve, this way you will charge in a liquid form which will add some oil in the system for lubrication and not only gas.

If the AC is off you can charge through the High and Low side, open both valves and watch the gages until it reaches 60 PSI, close both valves and turn the AC on, wait until cool air starts coming from the vents.

If the AC is On, charge only through the low side (Blue Hose) and watch the gauge until the low side is 40 PSI and the high side is around 110 PSI, check the air vents and use a thermometer, a good running system should be 30 to 40 degrees difference between the air in the Vehicle and the air coming out of the Vents.

Listen to the system, if it short cycles it's because your'e still low, add a little more and wait. Do not over charge it.

  Hope this will help.

  Good Luck,

Actually, I'd be interested in hearing about this as well.
