Re: [Peugeot-L] vanishing brake fluid

I haven't had recent experience with leaking clutch/brakes, however, over 10 years ago I had the problem of the cluch master cylinder leaking on my 505. In fact the clutch pedal went completely limp and wouldn't allow me to release the clutch. At that time after removing all kinds of components in the engine compartment to try to get at the clutch master, I was informed that it could be rebuilt from the inside of the car. I got a clutch master cylinder rebuild kit and did just that. It wasn't expensive or complicated, just a few rubber seals, etc. Instructions come with the kit and when you see it and start taking it apart it will become self evident what you have to do. For sure, it is uncomfortable and in an awkward position to get at because you have to do it hanging down from the driver's seat. You need a shop light, but it is eminently doable.

From what I recall, the reservoir for the brake fluid also serves as the resorvoir for the clutch. If this is so, would it not be possible for the brake fluid to be leaking onto the floor of the vehicle, explaining the mystery of the vanishing fluid?

While it's possible that fluid is leaking into the brake booster as well, but I think I would rebuild the clutch master cylinder first to see if that solves the problem before proceeding into the brake booster. For an experienced mechanic it might be a simple task, but for a novice who has to learn as I go, I try to simplify things as much as possible.

With respect to the question about the best way to clean up brake fluid,   I don't recall how I did this. However, it's good to keep in mind that brake fluid is water soluable, so I imagine you could wash it down several times with water and dish detergent, each time vacuuming it up with a shop vac (or a vac at the do it yourself car wash centre).
