And I´m fairly sure that the 604 was equipped with this engine ! We still have the 604 GTI 2.9 in the shed and also Bob Ruggeri in NY has one of these GTI´s with the 2.9 ZNJ-engine.

The evolution at the 604 is:

604 V6 SL - 2.7 with carburator (ZM 128 )
604 TI    - 2.7 K-jetronic (ZMJ)
604 STI   - 2.7 K-jetronic Phase II ( new dash from 1980 upwards ) (ZMJ)
604 GTI   - 2.9 K-jetronic Phase II ( new dash from 1982/83 upwards )
(ZNJ) The main optical difference - the carby-type has valve-covers in black-painted metal while the later K-Jetronic-typs have alloy-valve-covers. So all together the 604/504 V6 has 4 different valvecover-gaskets, right and left as well as for alloy- or metal-covers.

You´re right with the huge difference between the 2.7 carby and the K-jetronic. Had both cars over here running and even the noise while running was a difference like fire and water.

Besides that: the 604 GTI 2,9 had exactly 155 hp instead 136 hp at the 2.7. From my feeling the 604 2.9 was definetely FASTER and STRONGER than the 505 V6 with 143 hp. Also the harmonic between tranny and engine felt better at the 3Hp22 from the 604 than with the 4HP22 at the 505. Also consumption - the 604 never took more than 10 Litres/100 km while 13 OnLitres are more a normal worth for the 505...

I am fairly sure that the 604 did not come out with the 2.9 engine with K-jet.
It did come out with the 2664 cc engine with K-jet rather than the single/twin carb setup though.
The k-jet 604 was from around 1981 (possibly earlier, but I do have an 81 for parts) through to at least 1985.

There is a huge difference in driveability between the carb 604 and the k-jet 604 (much better) but the 505 has a number of superior features that come with electronic injection
