RE: [Peugeot-L] 1980 505 SD clutch adjustment

I had a Fiero where 1/2 the fingers had broken off over time. I didn't know too much about the cars as I hated it to pieces. I kept trying and trying to bleed the clutch better to get it to disengage properly. Exasperated, I took it to a clutch shop. He had never done a Fiero but did it anyway. Said 1/2 the fingers were gone. I guess cheap clutch diaphragms can fail. I just chalked it up to GM Excellence.

He said he'd never let another Fiero into the shop after working on it. Couldn't blame him.

Matt,
I had to have done what Dan said about a year and a half ago on my 87 sti. The L shaped end hadn't fallen off (yet), but there wasn't much of the rod left to hold it there. In addition, the hole in the pedal was worn to an oblong shape, which compounded matters. Morris Motors in Rochester filled the hole, then drilled it out, and replaced the clutch rod with a new one, and it was good as new (I guess, it had 87,000 miles on it when I bought it).

But then about a month and a half ago, I was trying to push the clutch through the floor to disengage it. If I didn't slide it into first when stopping, I would have had to shut the engine down and restarted it in first. I had to double clutch and get the RPMs right to shift up and down, and it would just go into reverse. I thought the rod had broken or the hole had elongated again, but no such luck. It turned out that the ends of the fingers on the clutch had worn, which prevented the clutch from disengaging fully. That set me back a few bucks! The worst part is that I had the clutch replaced about four years ago for the same reason. The first time, there was some light wear on the surface of the clutch; this time there was no wear at all on the surface.

If anyone can explain what would cause the ends of the fingers to wear away, I'd like to know.

Steve
