Hey again group-
I've been living with the long travel clutch in my 1980 505 SD and
have plans to follow the groups advice and take a good look at the
linkage and to give it a good bleeding when I have the time. In the
meantime, I had to make a 250 mile trip to a friend's house in the
car, and once I got to his house, I noticed another problem with my
clutch.
I rarely ever set the parking brake since it likes to stick on, so I
just leave the car in gear. I was showing the car to my friend and
pushing it back and forth with my leg against the bumper as we were
talking. I've done this before with other vehicles, and they usually
roll back a couple of inches and make a click or a tick when the
driveline slack is taken up, then the vehicle would "bounce" back
forward.
However, while I was doing this to the 505, I noticed that it would
roll back a good half a foot and stop with a horrible crunching,
grinding noise coming from the bellhousing! It sounded like a bunch
of aluminum cans stuffed up into the clutch! I know that this is not
right, but is it something to be really worried about? Would this be
indicative of a broken pressure plate/clutch disc, or simply an old
car with many worn parts?
While driving it, I noticed that the something underneath is
crashing more than it used to while changing gears. I'm afraid now
that maybe my clutch hasn't been relasing all the way and I've
wrecked something down there communing 70 miles a day for the last
year.
Anyway, if someone can advice, I'd appreciate it. I changed the
clutch in my Mi16, and I figure anything would be easier than doing
it in a front driver.
I'm also looking around for a XD2S motor with turbo and the 5 speed
gearbox for this car.
