no, over here in Germany they only sold the 143hp-version. Either they
offered the 505 V6 OR the 505 V6 GTI. Although the GTI sounds as the
better equipped car indeed the "normal" V6 was the better equipped one:
Only the V6 had ABS and leather-steering, not the V6 GTI !
Only reason why the 170hp-version was not sold in Germany could be the
emission-laws over here starting in 1990. Can´t confirm 100% but I mean
that the 505 ZN3J was NEVER supplied WITHOUT catalysator over here.
Know from Richard Marken in Queensland/Australia that the 604 was only
sold with the 2.7-PRV6 and the GM-tranny, never with the 5-speed-box and
also never with the ZF-tranny.
Yep, you first see no greater difference between the ZMJ (2.7) and ZNJ
(2.9), only the emblem "GTI" gives an advice on the engine. All
aggregates are the same and also inside the car there is no sign for a
difference.

Wouldn't you get the euro spec 170 hp 505 V6 over there rather than the
US version?
I will have to have a closer look at the 85 604 GTI ... A 2.9 could help
to explain things a bit.
I am happy to stand corrected (especially if it means that the above 604
is a bit gruntier :)
