Car: 1982 604 TD with IRS and LSD
I started up this morning and something went bang and as I drove away I
heard all sorts of gear noises. I looked around and all seemed okay and
I drove it around with lots of noise but everything functioning
normally. When I finally got underneath to get a good look it turns out
that the upper mount on the differential has broken off. The
differential is hanging off the driveshaft tube and the tube has sagged
onto the crossmember under it. I'm sure that is why it is making so much
noise, so my questions are:
- How bad is it to drive it around like this?
- Can the mount be welded back together by a competent mechanic, or do
I need to do try to replace the differential?
Any thoughts?
