Robert,
I went through a lot of winters in Maine and Upstate NY with the
diesels in my sig. I got by just fine with a lower radiator hose
heater in each of them. I had an inside switch for an outdoor
receptacle, and even on the coldest nights, I'd turn it on when I
first got up, and the engine would fire up smoke free an hour or so
later. The heater was sending out warm air before I got to the road.
They were about $15, if I remember correctly, not too difficult to
install, and seemed to last about three years.
