Speaking of camless engines, don't forget the BMW V8
in the 745 with the electro-hydraulic solenoids that
open the valves. In fact, there is no throttle
either! The computer determines how far to open the
intake valves based on "throttle" input from the
driver. Very light throttle, very low lift/duration
valve opening, all of which is controlled by the
computer. Full "throttle" and the computer opens the
valves for max lift and duration. With this set-up,
the computer has lots of ways to effect emissions as
well, although I don't think there is anything but
oxygen sensors in the exhaust. If it had hc and NOx
sensors, it could use injector pulse spread, intake
valve lift/duration, ignition advance/retard, and
exhaust lift/duration to finely control all the
emissions! Pretty neat system. I'd hate to be the
schmuck who connected the jumper cables wrong trying
to start it with a dead battery!!!
