Alan,
I had the same exact problem once with an MGB. Went
through the entire ignition system and then to the
carbs. Never once thought to check the spark plugs
snce I had replaced them within the previous couple
thousand miles. Well, finally checked them and found
that, for some reason, #3 plug gap had narrowed itself
from the 0.028" I normally ran to 0.009". Reset it
and all was well. For a while at least until
something else decided to go on permanent vacation. I
think it was 1st gear that checked out next!
I still have the car although it now has a Datsun
280z 5 speed in place of the original 4 (now 3) speed
tranny.
