Hey Mike,

Soak the union with a lot of rust penetrant (I use the red bottled Rust-Check - sprays a read oily foam), and use a small "nut jaw" vise grip on the nut. If you can fit a small hammer up there - a few wraps also helps.

I personally hate so called brake wrenches - or flared nut wrenches. The "nut jaw" vise grip doesn't damage soft unions and it has WAY more clamping force to acturall grip the union.

Good luck with it!

Rabin

  Hi all,

My 405 has decided to play up tonight.

The issue is probably wwater-related because it rained to beat hell   earlier today and last night.

I parked the car with the wipers off yesterday, but when I started it   tonight to take one of our kids out, the wipers were "on", an a superlong    intermittent mode (this is a DL with a fixed interval). That   is, the wiper switch is off, but every 20 seconds or so, the wipers   screeched across the dry windshield.

So I disconnected the motor and sprayed the electrical connector with   Combat and WD40, but it's still doing it. Any thoughts, other than   waiting for drier weather? Around here, that could be March 2006...

The other issue is my rear brake proportioning valve hasn't been   working for about 4 1/2 years. The consequence of this is very rusty   rear discs and that's not good. First the compensating spring broke   (rust) then I replaced it about three years ago and now the hydraulic   plunger on the compensator body is jammed in the "no rear brakes"   position. Hammering it mercilessly did not budge it at all.

So them I tried Plan B, which was to see if the four line unions   could be freed, so I could change it for a good used or even new   one. No dice - I got one free but the second accessible one started   rounding even with my Craftsman brake wrench. Hmmm

Any thoughts on this? Time for the scrap heap?

  Regards,
  Mike Tippett
