The lateral seals at the side of the rear main cap shrink with age,
allowing oil to escape through the gap at the ends of the main
cap. Replacing them is tricky, because if you don't do it exactly right
they will stretch on installation only to shrink back and leak again
soon. So the easy fix is the recommended one for the
non-professional: drop the pan and dab silicone sealant in the gaps
between the main cap and the block, and put the pan back on before the
silicone sets up.
