Hi all
I have a 1981 505 S Turbo Diesel. I am attempting to determine if it
has a blown head gasket.
The symptoms are this:
Coolant line at thermostat is expanding.
No oil in coolant
no coolant in oil
white smoke while idling
I just received the 505 workshop manual which covers the diesel
engine. This car has the XD2S turbo engine.
The book recommends using a compression gauge in the glow plug holes.
This is too small of a hole for my compression gauge, not to mention
the gauge is for gas engines and probably does not read high enough
for the diesel compression values.
Anyway with this short coming on my part in mind, I have been reading
about the diesel systems all of which I am unfamiliar.
In the book it says there is a degassing outlet on the water pump.
Also mentioned albeit briefly, it notes a degassing tank. This tank is
where the coolant system is filled.
What can you tell me about the function of the degassing system?
Could this system malfunction and cause my coolant lines to expand?
How can I check to see if the pressure in the coolant system is normal
for an engine with 200k miles?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Brian Rodgers
