Re: [Peugeot-L] Stuck engine

I am the one that suggested turning the engine over using the 35mm nut (I don't know if the turbo gas model has the same 35mm nut as the XN6) on the front of the crank. I did not suggest forcing it and snapping off the nut, just using the nut to turn over the engine.

I think pulling the starter (on anything) is much more work than just having direct access to a nut on the crank pulley. One can gently turn the engine back and forth using the crank pulley. Removing the starter entails wire removal and, if the location is similar to the XN6 starter, wrestling with a couple of bolts intentionally designed to meld with the fireweall and be difficult to remove. Pulling the starter, unless one can't get the motor to turn over using the crank nut, sounds like a lot of extra unnecessary work.

As for the guy trying to do the job, I think it is a good idea for him to make sure that the car is out of gear during this operation. I have worked on many old cars and, with a can of WD-40 and a bit of patience (not that much, actually), have managed to free up engines. Anyone who snaps off a 35mm nut trying to loosen up an engine is applying way too much force.
