We (Peugeot-l and I) feared the worst: a cracked head. However much to
my surprise, pressure testing revealed no cracks at all! For this 1
time in a million, it was just the head gasket. Either the wrong
h.gasket was used (it wasn't Peugeot's), or the job was poorly done or
both.
Big thanks goes out to everyone's suggestions, including Rabin, Bob
Bruce, Brian Holmes, August, Mike Aube, among others. In my mind it
was a group effort that got me rolling agian.
Now the motor is running better than ever!
Here are some lessons learned:
- If you want the job done right, do it yourself! The 'Peugeot
mechanic' who did the head last caused me lots of greif. It looked
intimidating, but once I started turning wrenches, it wasn't so bad.
- Dollar store tupperware containers are excellent for holding nuts
and bolts. Write on the containers with a marker.
- If you get angry and/frustrated while working, take a break, instead
of tossing tools in disgust, and finding them a month later when you're
done. Happened to a friend of mine....
- Have the relevent literature at hand while doing the job. A good
shop manual makes a world of difference.
- Bring a decent tool kit on long trips.
- Any cooling issues in an N9TE need immidiate attention! Don't bother
with any long trips before they are resolved.
Thanks again.
