Inspires me. I'm going to have a fiddle with my 505 Turbo wiring and try to
get rid of a nasty short in the radio/door lock circuit.
Chris, do you happen to know someone good to take a 505 wagon to in Seattle
to have a bunch of front end parts installed? I've got then from Brian Holm
already-- My local mechanic has quit Peugeots.

Subject: [Peugeot-L] 504 Diesel victories, but there's always more...
Hey all,
Thought I'd share a fun little account of working on my old Pug. I
spent the better half of yesterday sorting out the electrics under
the dash of my '78 504D. I had dancing gauges when I used the turn
indicators, and the heater control backlighting never has worked. I
fixed the bad ground in the instrument cluster with no trouble, so I
figured I'd take a look at the lights too. I tested the bulb, which
was fine, so I pried out the rheostat and jumpered the two wires
together. It worked! From a 505, I had an extra rheostat, which is
constructed differently (better) and looks just like the 504 rheo.
It snapped right in, and everything works, once again.
The top dash pad was badly cracked when I bought her, and I'm
leaving it off for now so I can investigate refinishing services.
I've heard good and bad things about some of the companies who apply
new vacuum-formed vinyl to old dashes, so it's time to ask around.
The heater blower is also noisy, and I may try to adapt a new motor
to it, but it's not a big deal. Although, that'd give me a chance
to figure out why the temp is either cold, or on full blast as soon
as you move the lever away from cold.
What I really need to do is rebuild the rear brake calipers. They
drag, leaving a nice coating of brake dust on my rear wheels.
And on the driver's side there's rust-through on the rockers and at
the bottom of the rear fender. The chip-guard coating traps
moisture. This particular car came from Utah, so I'm sure the salt
didn't help. Time to get out the welder <sigh>. A good winter
project.
I also spent some time in the evening putting Zymol on my '79. It's
a California car with no rust at all and beautiful paint. Of course
it needs a tune-up; she smokes on startup. Nothing is ever perfect.
This probably isn't helpful to anyone, but I always like to hear
what people are doing with their cars, apart from failing emissions
or experiencing electrical catastrophes.
Oh, and someone on the list should buy that gorgeous '76 504 gas on
eb*y!
