I made a post last week about my 85 505 wagon not starting. I replaced
the fuel filter. I assumed it was the pump since there was significant
evidence of a lack of fuel pressure at the fuel distributor and the
original fuel pump wasn't making noise. There is definitely power at
the fuel pump. It's not an ignition issue as the car starts immediately
when I run it on starting fluid.
Since I already had the parts I went through with the replacement of
the fuel pump. When I loosened the pump outlet I was surprised to see a
significant release of fuel pressure. The only thing I can think of is
that there's an obstruction somewhere between the pump and the
distributor -- I believe there's a fair chance that it's the check
valve. Also, the new pump is apparently working as when I tried
starting the car, I must've failed to adequately tighten the outlet on
the new pump and it leaked as if it were under pressure. After tighting
it a little more to compress the crush washers, the leaking stopped.
Any suggestions? Anyone know the price of a check valve? I'm not
exceptionally enthusiastic about doing any more work on this car.
