Brian,
Thanks so much for your expert advice. Sorry, I forgot to say it is diesel. And yes, I think it's the vacuum pump area where the squeal is. But there is definitely a voltage drop when it happens. I know there is oil in the vacuum pump, the manual describes how to check it, but you have to remove it because the plate to check is on the side, but can you unscrew the plates on top also?
In any case, assuming it's an alternator problem, how elaborate is that to replace? I have a spare belt, but if you have to remove alternator and/or waterpump, I 'd rather pay someone else. Do you deal with parts? How much for an alternator reconditioned or new?
Thanks again
Eddie

Eddie,
You don't specify, but it sounds as if you have a diesel, on which the vacuum pump is mounted on the upper right front of the engine. There is nothing up there on the gas engine, but the steering pump is at mid-height on the right. If the charge rate drops when the squealing occurs, that suggests that the alternator is slowing or stopping due to belt slippage, which is also making the noise.
Vacuum pumps can seize up when they fail (brake assist would almost immediately disappear should that happen). If the short vacuum pump belt driven by the water pump is very tight, it might be able to stop the water pump, which would also stop the alternator. Whatever it is, it seems to be an intermittent increased load on the belt system causing slippage, and probably damage to at least one belt.

I have a 1975 504 Sedan. Very well maintained. I hear a loud
squealing noise that seems to come from the area where the belts
converge on the upper right side of the radiator (as you sit in the
drivers seat) - I sprayed some DW 40 and it went away a few hours but
then right back. It looks as if the pulley in whichever gizmo that is
in that spot may not be spinning fully, but the belt seems tight
enough. I notice the alternator dropping quickly to discharge when
the squealing starts and seems to build back up when it goes away.
Any clues? Do I have to replace the alternator? How much work is
that and where can I get a good recond one?
