The voltmeter is not an ammeter, therefore it only indirectly indicates alternator
charging. What it shows is the condition of the battery, so eihter your battery
may be going bad or you may have something draining the system. Other
possibilities include bad connections on either the B+ or ground side of your system,
especially corroded connections at the battery or main grounds at engine block
or chassis. To check for drains, notice when you hook up the battery if the battery
terminal sparks to the battery post as it comes close to contact with it; or disconnect
B+(preferably, although negative wtll work) and connect a 12V test light across
the battery terminal and battery post with all electrical devices off.. If the test light
comes on, then you have a drain(or draw) on your system. To narrow it down,
pull a fuse at a time until the test light goes off; and then you can see what
devices are on that fuse. Disconnect each device until the test light goes off
(with the fuse reinstalled), and then you know your culprit. You can also use an
ammeter instead of the test light, but be sure to start at the highest range or
you'll blow the internal fuse; and most only go to 10amps, although you rarely
encounter drains larger than that. You could also use an amp probe that clips
around the battery cable with everything hooked up, but a good one that can
detect low amperage accurately is not cheap(my Fluke was $500.00). There
could be other problems, but these are the most likely. If you don't want to pay
to have your battery checked out, switch batteries with the other car and see if
the problem goes away. This time of year I always suspect batteries as weak
ones fail as the temperatures drop.

The alternator on my '79 504D gives off a weak charge. While driving
at highway speeds for an extended period of time (hours), it slowly
starts to charge normally (according to the voltmeter). The wiring is
good. Just to be sure, I temporarily swapped it with the alt from
my '78, and it had the same problem in both cars. I removed the brush
holder, but the brushes look OK. Could the diodes be faulty? What
else can go wrong with these?
