OnI know what you mean I busted one of those rods in my 404 sunroof
it was $1.40 and took 20 min to replace

Ahh but you are SO wrong.
My late Dad had a 1972 504 with sunroof. When the car was three years
old, visiting BC, one of the rods that locks it in place broke,
snapped clean in two.
We took the roof apart at my uncle's place and he had the rod brazed
together at a muffler shop...a repair that held until he dumped the
car in 1977. The ZF gearbox blew a week after he traded it in on a
1977 504 SL with 4 speed.
