[Peugeot-L] 84 XN6 oil circulation

I just did a series of gasket replacements (both oil pans, timing cover, timing cover support plate, rear main lateral seals) and am not getting any oil, or so it seems, at the rockers. When I start the engine I get a lot of clatter coming from inside the valve cover.

I had to remove the oil pump to get at the rear main and pan. I removed it, wrapped it in newspaper, and replaced it making sure to install a new "o" ring when I did. As I had manually turned over the engine to install a new tensioner and timing chain, the shaft that goes from the oil pump to the base of the distributor moved. When I replaced the oil pump I used a long screwdriver to alter the position of the little key in the pump so that the shaft would go in properly. It seemed as if I had done everything correctly. The pump went in easily and with no resistance. I torqued the bolts to specs and reinstalled the lower pan.

This morning I pulled the lead to the coil and turned the engine over, on and off, for several seconds. I pulled the oil filler cap and looked for oil at the #4 intake rocker, but saw none. I turned the engine over some more, but still no oil. Then I started it and let it run for 5-10 seconds and still no oil.

My diagnostic impulse is to remove the oil line that goes from the block to the rear of the head and see if I get anything.

Does anyone out there have a theory as to what went wrong and what I might do to remedy the situation?
Thanks,
Ken
