[Peugeot-L] 84 XN6 oil pump priming tricks

From: kenneth parker <elkeni_at_mac.com>

Thinking that I did not need to prime an oil pump that I had removed and replaced untouched, save for changing the rubber "o" ring, I am not getting any oil to the rocker arm assembly.

The oil light goes out when I turn the key on, but I see no oil dribbling from the holes in the rockers and if I run the engine (which I have done for 10 seconds, or so) there is a clatter under the valve cover that was not there before and no apparent oil coming up.

One list member informed me that I should have primed the pump before installing it. Might anyone know:

  1. If there is a way to coax the pump to work without removing the pan, or the timing cover and chain?
  2. If I have to remove the pan and pump what is the correct procedure for priming the pump?
  3. Do I need, if I remove the pump, to put in yet another new "o" ring or can I just use the one that I put in yesterday.

Any responses on this one are welcomed.
Thanks,
Ken
