All parts of the car need to be grounded in order to to prevent electrolisis from eating away your car. This is particularly necessary in damp salty conditions. The only direct connection to the engine block would be the coupling to the exhaust header which would not be especially good. Note the use of grounding wires on the strut inserts, not likely to be necessary to prevent static electricity from building up in the shocks.

radio interference from static discharge from the exhaust system being
supported by rubber hangers.
