OnI wish my 504 was a 5 speed instead of a 4 speed...it would probably get 40 or so and the engine wouldn't sound like I'm killing it at 60mph. I have tried to put it in 5th several times by accident, lol.

The high compression of a diesel engine is what slows the car when
coasting down hill. Pop it into neutral while on a decline, and
you'll see what I mean. The same car with a gas engine will pick up
speed going down hill, since a gas engine has very low internal
pressures compared to a diesel.
Therefore, this phenomenon only translates into 'rolling resistance'
when going down a hill off throttle, and should not lower mpg in any
way.
Iv'e heard of 505 TD owners reporting mid 30's mpg, but they are
usually sedans ( which are a few hundred lbs lighter than wagons)
that have lovely 5 spd manual transmissions. Boo hoo for us wagon
owners, although they cannot hold a candle to our load carrying
abilities!
