I think the majority on the list do their own maintenance, but even in the case that you describe with the oil bath air filter - the service life of the filter is incredibly long - I've rarely done one in all the ones I've owned and the only reason I did it was to check it out. Seems like ancient technology - but it's one of the best filtrations systems with very low restriction...

So although it's odd - it can easily be justified when you consider the service interval and the quality of the unit.

The hardest part is actually finding someone competent enough to do the work, and to charge a reasonable amount of money. All cars have their quirks, and all brands have lemons - but I think cars that were "lemons" are most often due to poor maintenance or a crappy mechanic. I've bought few "white elephant" cars and they've always been some of the most reilable cars I've owned after doing some work to bring them back up to spec...

Yeah, think about that.

What¹s the shop time for cleaning an oil bath air filter? 1.5 hrs? At $80+/hr, who spends $120 to ³change² an air filter. (I think Peugeot design has some culpability here, but I haven't priced a Mercedes filter change.) That's a factor as to why these cars are in our hands now.
