Hi Mark,
You should perfrom an oil pressure test ; if the oil pressure light comes on, so will the temperature and stop light . Before doing this, however ,you can disconnect the lead to the oil pressure sender to test, and if all those lights go out with the engine running (idling), you likely have a defective oil pressure sending unit. If replacing it with a new or known good unit makes no difference to your symptoms, then perform an oil pressure test by installing an actual oil pressure gauge . You should get about 20 psi at idle cold/warm, and about 40 psi at about 3,000 rpm. On  If your readings are too low you should pull the oil pan, oil pump (examine the oil pump and screen), pull a rod and main bearing cap and look for signs of wear and examine the crankshaft journal for scoring....anyone of these will cause low oil pressure.

In my experience on Peugeot 505 ( XN, ZDEL/ZDJL ,N9T , ZN3J engines) most of the time the oil pressure light has come on as a result of a defective oil pressure sending unit: I am assuming, from your message, that the engine runs fine, with no noise or rattling!
           all the best,
                           Patrick

  hi folks

the 1990 505 GR is worrying me tonight. driving home the red stop/   ignition light, along with the oil light and the temperature light,   came on in intermittent flickering. the car was running smoothly and   the water temp normal.

i checked oil and water - both fine.

i drove home, my disposition disturbed irregularly by a flicker of   red on the dashboard every now and then.

  what might be happenning?

  cheers

  Mark
