This may have no bearing on your task at hand, but I remember having to loosen or free the heater hoses from inside the engine compartment to get the unit out. On one job that I totally messed up I tried to undo the snaps that held the housing together and remove the core without first removing the housing. I only did this job on a few GL, gas 504's, so what I encountered may have nothing to do with what you are dealing with.
