Likely, the stalk-switch is not making good contacts (crud). Unlike the
newer version, these can be dismantled, cleaned and reassembled. These are
very ingenious pieces. They're not as complicated as wind-up alarm clocks,
but have little spring clips that are wont to escape when released. Also,
one must be careful to set the stalk in the right way round on reassembly.
