My apologies if I made the wrong suggestion, this is what I have always done to check my alternator. I did it based on the advice of my mechanic, but this was received in pre-ECU times.

NEVER DISCONNECT THE BATTERY OF A RUNNING CAR. The alternator needs the battery as a regulating load and can easily over volt and burn itself and the ECU if the bat goes Onoffline...
