Pontus,
If the battery light is on with the ignition off,
but the light goes out with the engine running, I
would suspect a problem with the ignition switch which
is allowing current to go at least through the light
and onto the alternator field. When you start it, the
alternator does its thing and shoves current back
against the battery through the light, thus turning it
off and allowing unlimited use of the car and all its
electrical things. The fact that it won't start
without a jump or something suggests to me that you
may also have battery trouble.
I would also see what else might be functional with
the ignition key out. If the problem is the switch
itself, its entirely possible that other things that
usually only work when the ignition is on might work
with the key off and out now. If you find that
happening, it would be further proof that the problem
is the switch (in addition to the battery).
Regards,
Ben Pender
