Hello,

We've once owned such an Audi 1.2 TDI that you mention.

It is true, the car can be driven with below 3 L / 100 km (whatever MPG US that is, too lazy to calculate) on a regular basis, you just have to drive at or below 120 km/h (75 mph). My absolutely worst fuel consumtion was 4.7 L / 100 km, including short-range city driving and motorway trips at maximum speed. It will easily do 180 km/h (above 110 mph).

However, the service for this car is more than poor, Audi garages really hate it, and have an attitude that made me think they also hate every customer of it. The A2 did never sell well and the 1.2 TDI model that was marketed as the first "four-door three-litre car" (an referral to the 3 L / 100 km consumption) was made in really low numbers, 1000 cars without aircon and another 5000 with aircon and generally higher equipment level (that added about 0.5 L /100 km fuel consumption even with aircon switched off).

The transmission of the A2 1.2 was a semi-automatic type, and a source of constant trouble. We had two breakdowns and horrible cost whenever the car had to visit the garage. We had it about 1 year, and sold it with great loss.

Although it was really unbelievably economic and also surprisingly lively and fast, I most likely will never ever touch an Audi again. I think with nice service, we'd probably even stuck with it, but as it was, an unreliable car and a terrible service, there was no other way than sell and forget it as soon as possible.

Still, I'm hooked by this concept, that a regular car can be driven with 100mpg. It was fast, safe, quiet, comfortable (albeit only on top-notch road surfaces, thanks to the absolutley shocking sub-standard suspension) and at least for two persons there was a lot of room.

As a replacement for the 3-year old Audi daily driver, we bought a 22-year old Mercedes 200D and this is ultimately more reliable, even with 300.000 km on the odo and although it was really in a neglected state when we got it. Somehow the Merc does look better in the garage, next to my 604, as well :-)

with many regards,
Thomas
