do about 75 people here want to go in as a group and buy the 206 on eBay?   co-op style.

We would be THE belle of the ball at all the Euro car shows!

working as a car dealer, and as a private owner who did a simple personal importation from canda, and was part of a commercial dealer importation as well, i am aware of the available exemptions that appear to fly in the face of the regular import procedures. What that seller on eBay says is consistent and sounds plausible. EPA and DOT can allow government agencies to ignore the rules for the public. I also know that once one state issues a title to a vehicle, it is basically out of the woods as far as resale, because all titles in the USA can be transferred now and every state accepts the transfer of titles from other states, regardless of the different procedures. The de facto process ends up going along the lines of the vehicle purchaser simply taking the title, no matter what, as long as it has a few signatures on the right lines. What looks on the surface like such a big unknown comes down to a clerk just moving on to the next one and performing his rote duty.

(I recently handled the sale of a classic VW. The buyer left the title and title transfer behind, here in NY. When I contacted him, he said it didnt matter, since OHIO had already registered the car for him and his new OH title was on its way. One time, we unfortunately and unintentionally ended up with a 1999 Volvo V 70 5 speed from Canada. There were so many problems with the car's title, title transfer papers, stamps from the importer, and stamps to show compliance with EPA and DOT that it was a joke. It LOOKED like a nightmare. New buyer was aware, did not care, was very eager to get a FIVE SPEED NEW VOLVO! Paperwork accepted, NY title issued, no delays, no problems.)

One nagging thing in my mind though, at least here in NY state, is what would happen at the NYS Inspection. This process is basically a joke anyway (at least in this part of the state where emissions are not checked), but the Inspection certificate is only made available after the state computer on site accepts the details. Data like vehicle make must be chosen from a pull down list.

I know and have seen certain places fudge other aspects just to get the certificate out and on a car, as long as no serious safety violations exist. I suppose the right place could do the same sort of thing.

I am blessed with the advantage of dealer registration, not available to personal owners who would want to register a car lacking the usual approval...Whatever vehicle I place my NY plate on is legally registered and insured under a sort of blanket provision. IT'S QUITE HANDY! :-)

So, for example, if someone here did buy that 206 for himself, he could hire me to fly in and drive to its new home legally and with NO fuss, delay, or playing around trying to get a temporary transit tag, the regulations of which are ALL different from state to state.

  hmmm
