It depends on the engine knock. A cracked piston, a bad camshaft, a loose
rocker arm, a loose flywheel, a cracked flexplate or pulley will all permit
you to drive some distance without destroying the engine. A knock from a
connecting rod or main bearing though will not last more than a few feet.

I was always too horrified to drive the car at all, ever, anywhere. AND I
WANTED TO DRIVE IT SOOOO BADLY! Even at least as a field car or whatever.
Alas, I never did get to enjoy that car at all again. I sold it to a guy
who junks cars for $200. BUT HERE'S THE THING. He said he thought it was
too funky just to take to the crusher immediately...so he drove it! And he
drove it and he drove it around! AND HE POUNDED ON THE THING AS HARD AS HE
COULD FOR DAYS ON END...And then what? then he DROVE it to the crusher!

Mobil 1 came in 0w50, 0w30 maybe, but it was something similar-- as free
flowing at cold start as it could be, but thicker in general)...never the
less,

driving anywhere from half a mile to a few dozen feet with an oil light that
just came on or an engine noise that just started AND PROMPTLY TURNED THEIR
v-6 ALFA ENGINES INTO USELESS EFETTE PIECES OF (dis-similar)METALS... and
triggered vilification after vilification of me for being so stupid to even
ask such a question!

> WELL, the car in question was a VW, with 1.8 liter 4 cyl with 235,000
miles. It made it all 25 miles and more just fine, no problem!... well,
it's only a LITTLE noisier now than it was, but it never stalled or
anything...

> SO my question of how far you can get away with driving a knocking
engine depends greatly on the people you ask and how accustommed they are to
enjoying stout ROBUST engine designs! as i am from Volvo 4 cylinders and
from Peugeots. and the V6 alfa is probably one of the least robust engines
around euro car circles. (in fairness, if i had asked the Alfa Spider group
the same thing, the answer probably would not have been so bad bc those
people are used to a tough little engine in that Alfa 4 cylinder block!)...
