It's why it's knocking that really determines how long it will last, but it makes   no sense to drive any car with a knock as it will be causing more damage as   you drive it. If it is a rod knock(or main knock), what starts as bearing wear   eventually will become crankshaft wear. If you stop driving immediately, you   may be lucky enough to pull the pan and replace bearings only. If it has no oil   pressure, then most engines will self-destruct fairly quickly. The Alfa engines   actually have very robust bottom ends, and the 4 cyl. has had a nitrided crank   since it became a 2 liter. The V-6 has always been nitrided- its weakness has   always been the belt detensioner(as Alfa calls it) which works with oil pressure;   so since a knock usually is related to low oil pressure, you can see the problems running it with an oil pressure based tensioner and valves which will smack the   pistons. I did once run a BMW 325 that had actually seized while driving   because the owner cracked the oil pan and lost all of his oil, but once it cooled   down it actually started; so I ran it at almost full throttle(long story) for over a half   an hour until it made so many noises I thought it would blow up. When I tore   it down to rebuild it,I was astonished to find that there was no crank damage   whatsoever. It did have Slick 50 in it, so I guess that's an endorsement of its   effectiveness.

It made   a hell of a racket, some of which could be described as knocking,   hard to say being a diesel and half an exaust system.

He attempted to drive it to his shop, a 30 minute drive on the   freeway, and had a buddy follow him, just in case. But don't worry,   he said, it's a diesel, they last forever! I could drive this car to   Egypt!

On the on ramp he went, foot went to the floor. It didn't take long   for the rattle to become knocking then straight to KA-BAM! La engine   blew up, and buddy following got his windshield coated in dead   Peugeot motor oil. He turned on the wipers and smeared it all over   the windshield, and nearly rammed the disabled 504. Distance   traveled? A staggering 2 km. Then another 15 km to the nearest   wreckers, but on the end of a rope.

  True story!

installed a used engine into the car and when I fired it up it had what sounded like a rod knock. Since I had no history on this used motor, I pulled it out and installed a rebuilt one instead. Since I then had transportation I decided to check the 455 for the knock. What I found was that the oil pan had a slight dent near the front and one of the rod bolts was just touching the pan, thus the "knock".

Alas, I never did get to enjoy that car at all again. I sold it to a guy who junks cars for $200. BUT HERE'S THE THING. He said he thought it was too funky just to take to the crusher immediately...so he drove it! And he drove it and he drove it around! AND HE POUNDED ON THE THING AS HARD AS HE COULD FOR DAYS ON END...And then what? then he DROVE it to the crusher!

driving anywhere from half a mile to a few dozen feet with an oil light that just came on or an engine noise that just started AND PROMPTLY TURNED THEIR v-6 ALFA ENGINES INTO USELESS EFETTE PIECES OF (dis-similar)METALS... and triggered vilification after vilification of me for being so stupid to even ask such a question!

    > SO my question of how far you can get away with driving a knocking
engine depends greatly on the people you ask and how accustommed they are to enjoying stout ROBUST engine designs! as i am from Volvo 4 cylinders and from Peugeots. and the V6 alfa is probably one of the least robust engines around euro car circles. (in fairness, if i had asked the Alfa Spider group the same thing, the answer probably would not have been so bad bc those people are used to a tough little engine in that Alfa 4 cylinder block!)...
