Im tearing down a low mile (Im a engine machinist by trade, free machining)
1981 XD2 I bought out of a barn (68K miles) drove the car 3 months almost 3000
miles, averaged 34 mpg, never used any oil.
While going 60 mph out of the blue it developed a heavy rod knock, It
actually stalled when this happened. I restarted it for a sec , heard it knock (had
to doublecheck), shut it off immediately, towed it home. It might have had
a slight knock before it got loud , but with all the years I worked in a
noisy machine shop my hearing isnt the greatest, plus the fact its a diesel,
which makes it harder to tell.
Does this crank have any case hardening, or is it nitrated (like a ZDJL
crank) and is it turnable ? Im assuming its a steel crank, but concerned it might
be trashed .
