Bob, And Carl - thanks for the information so far.
fortunately, I'm blessed with a good local supply of both Volvos, and Eagle
premiers. The local You-Pull has both in stock right now, so prices will be
the same either way. the volvo oilpan and sump are much better suited to
what I need, but I've heard horror stories about the cams, and the
distributor would need relocating for the propane setup I have in mind. The
eagle motor has the split crank throws, and even-fire distributor, which
makes finding an aftermarket, recurved ignition for running propane easy,
but I'm not sure whether / not I'll have to rebuild the sump, and oil pickup
to clear my diff. I'm reasonably competent in both mechanics, and
machining, so I'm figuring it'll end up as a hybrid of the 2 motors. ( and
yes, i know all about the assorted camshaft issues when converting between
oddfire, and evenfire)
re: yahoo groups - couldnt find a specific PRV group, but have been in touch
with an Aussie group who have been quite helpful, especially about the
propane fuel setup. The 4wd is a non-issue: the setup I'll be using will
have dual transmissions back-to-back, with a divorced transfer case ( 4wd
unit) mounted at the rear. My intent is to build a machine where no single
component is too big / heavy for me to field strip in a remote area. 5 speed
tranny isnt necessary, either, and may be too long for the dual tranny
setup - this rig isnt intended to be a highway bomb, nor does it do extended
runs at more than 100 kph ( wind noise !) what it DOES do is go from say, my
house in BC, down the US west coast, into Mexico, then across Baja, to the
Sea of Cortez, then back up through Arizona/New mexico on the way home.
absolute worst case, I've already confirmed that all versions of the PRV V6
are internally balanced, so a plate adapter, and revised pilot bushing would
be all I'd need to run the ballhousing, flywheel, and tranny from another
marque...I'd rather just find the right mix of off the shalf parts, and not
have to worry about it.
there are volvo 262, and 264 series manual tranny cars in Canada, but I
havent been able to find one, even just to compare the bellhousings to the
volvo 4 Cylinders. AFAIK, all of the eagle premiers for this market were
automatics. Volvo 4 speeds are CHEAP here - $75 canadian, and I can have my
pick of 6, or 7 right now at the yard. I've only ever seen 3 peugeots ( all
4 cylinder 404's) , and Renault Fuego front wheel drives in the local yards.
I know there are a couple of local guys with a selection of peugeots and
renaults ( I think I even saw another 'kelowna' byline ont eh list) but I
dont knwo any of them personally to find out about parts.
regards
chris
