Hi,
The e stands for the greek letter eta symbolizing fuel economy in
this case. These are low rev high torque engines which last forever.
Very smooth to drive and as intended much better on fuel economy. the
first eta engine around was in the E28 series (525eta with a 2.7 l
170 hp engine). This cars though 20 years old are still around going
strong - some with over 400000 km without doing work to the engine
other than regular maintenance.
I would go for an eta engine as you don't have German freeways where
high-speed constant driving is usual. We used to have an 520i (of
1985) and always dreamed of the eta engine.
