Matt,
The common caliper/handbrake problem on 505/504s is that the
handbrake doesn't work at all after pads are replaced by forcing the
piston back without rotating it first.
If you are sure that the handbrake lever on the caliper returns fully
to its off position when you release the cable, there should be no
difference in caliper performance between using the handbrake and
using the foot brake. The lever pivots on a pin on the side of the
caliper; it is kept from cocking by a white nylon guide, and assisted
in returning by a coil spring around the pivot pin with a hook to the
lever. If any part of this assembly is damaged or out of place the
lever may not fully return, causing the brake to stick on.
If the piston is corroded or the sliding armature sticking the brake
may not release either, but that would happen with the foot brake as well.
Of course, if you set the handbrake when it is wet and warm, it may
stick on when it cools and freezes.
