The switch would be my guess, as well.
I like the feature where if you turn the switch off with the high
beams on, it automatically resets to low beam.
The latter ones (post-85) are a direct fit replacement and are
interchangeable to the old style (pre-86), but based on my small
statisical sample of two, the old style seems to be more robust.
