[Peugeot-L] 405 S questions

Less than two months ago, I picked up the Mi16 that I bought on Ebay. It's time I thanked Bob Bruce, Rob Courter, tj, Bill and others for all their advice. It's cost me about a hundred bucks in parts to take care of the car's problems and my list is now down to "install subwoofer" and other such trivialities. Thanks, guys, for all your help. (I highly recommend Bob's wiring trick to get full juice to the starter - what a difference! I'm about to add the relay to my wagon as well.)

Now - my next problem. On my last long trip with my 405 S, it suddenly went from topping up the coolant every few weeks, to needing full refill every couple hours. Even put the dashboard lights into full overheat mode, forcing me to immediately coast off the Interstate. I eventually got home, didn't use the car for a couple weeks. When I ran it to look for leaks, I couldn't find any. I don't see any sign of water on the dipstick. Once the engine warms up there's no visible exhaust.

However I see light wisps of steam coming from the rear of the engine, near the top, middle. I suspect it is what I call head gasket, I guess the Haynes folks refer to it as the "seal on the camshaft cover". I happen to have part # 0249.48 (new) on hand from my previous wagon. (Question #1:) Is that likely to fix my problem?

OnAnother question - possibly related. A few months ago I tried to re-gap the plugs until I got around to getting new ones. I could pull only the two plugs on either end; the two middle plugs wouldn't budge. I soaked them with PB Blaster which didn't do much good, although maybe after a few months....? Could this be related? Engine feels like it's "running on three cylinders".

Presuming the middle plugs still don't want to come out easy, I guess I could put my three-foot pipe on the breaker bar, but (Question #2:) what if I actually break the plug?

Thanks for the help guys.
